The popular Glebe Street crêperie The Crêpe Escape has launched a crowdfunding campaign to supply NHS frontline staff with treat boxes to "make their day a little lighter".

The owner, Alison Jones, says she hopes to raise £500 to help fund the scheme that started last week. They have so far raised £370, or 74% of their target.

"During this even more difficult 2nd wave of Coronavirus we wanted to do something to try and make the NHS staff day a little lighter on such dark days," says Alison.

"We feel so helpless and wish we could do more, stay safe, and keep others safe and feed people is all I can do.

"They are risking their own lives to save others and working in very extreme conditions. We have so much respect for them, whilst being frightened themselves, they are looking after patients who are alone and very scared."

The treat boxes include mini afternoon teas, or grazing boxes, with some essential refreshments to "help them through the day".

"We will coordinate, arrange deliveries, donate our time and donate as far as we can, will provide treats/ essentials for free but would like your help to support us with any donations, no matter how small," Alison continues.

"Rest assured, any donations we receive will be spent directly on treats for NHS staff."

Every box is adorned by a picture drawn by Alison's seven-year-old son, Zac. The pictures are captioned with heartfelt messages, including: "when it rains, look for rainbows" and "when it is dark, look for the stars".

A junior doctor at Llandough Hospital, Dr Jessica Flint, tells Nub News how edible donations have lifted spirits during darker times:

"We're definitely not heroes or anything like that, but some days have been really difficult. It's so nice to be receiving support from members of the public, especially as we are not able to meet with relatives face to face."

The packages have also inspired members of the public to do their bit for the community. One anonymous Penarthian thinks this should be a rallying point for the town:

"I know times are hard but if this week you have a little left over and wanted to show some support you can donate below so Alison can keep showing so much kindness.

"But we all know that support can be shown in many ways, not just financially, it's also about the thumbs up, the share or the kind comment.

"So no matter how much I'm pulling my hair out at the moment, tomorrow I'm going to try and be a little bit more Alison. Thank you for being an amazing lady!"
