On Saturday, 6th April 2019, Crafty Devil opened its doors in Penarth. The grand opening gave an insight into Crafty Devil and what it has to offer. It was a good chance to catch up with Rhys Watkins, the business's co-owner.
Crafty Devil Penarth is located in the space previously occupied by the Ocho lounge on Windsor Road. The interior is edgy but up market and there is plenty of space for people to eat, drink and relax.
So, why Penarth? Rhys says it has something to do with the fact that he and his best friend and business partner Adam Edinborough grew up in the area. They both went to St. Cyres secondary school in Penarth. Crafty Devil started out in Rhys's garden shed in Canton, before moving to a more mainstream premises, also in the City Centre. However, they were keen to bring their young brand back home. According to Rhys, Penarth is ''an affluent area with a strong community feel" and that makes it an ideal next step.
Apart from building a successful business, Crafty Devil aims to boost the independent side of Penarth's high street. "We want to bring more local independence back to the town centre where there are now a lot of chains. We think there's a gap in the market for a local, community based business like ours. Crafty Devil sources its beer from local independent suppliers, wherever possible, but we never compromise on quality."
There's also a very strong emphasis upon service quality and in the simplicity of the food menu, which is based on their meat and cheese platters. This is extended by a range of alternating pop-up style dishes. All of this is supported by a range of quality, independent beers. Crafty Devil Penarth also plans to offer televised sport on the big screen they've installed in the dining area.
Will Crafty Devil do events? ''Yes we will," says Rhys. "We'll have Pilsner nights, Barbecues and gourmet nights as well as other seasonal events, this is definitely on the agenda''
The garden area is still a work in progress. "We want to build a pop up style kitchen in the garden shed here, so we can cook and serve food outside in the summer months," says Rhys.
