Covid-19 cases have fallen by more than 30 per cent in the Vale of Glamorgan compared to the previous seven days, reveals official data published today (Monday, December 20).

Some 334 people tested positive for coronavirus today making the total number of people infected in the Vale for the seven days to December 20 just 930 – down 31.7 per cent on the previous seven days.

Official data also points to low hospital admissions. Across Wales, 158 people went into hospital with coronavirus between December 11 and December 17, a decrease of 10 per cent on the previous week.

These latest figures come days after the first minister warned Wales must brace itself for the "storm of Omicron".

On Friday (December 17) the number of Omicron cases detected in Wales rose by 64 to 159.

Social distancing in offices and shops will be reintroduced from December 27 and there will be a 2 metre rule in workplaces as well as one-way systems in supermarkets. Nightclubs will close at midnight on Boxing Day.

Mr Drakeford warned that London was already seeing an increase in people going to hospital with Covid.

"We have to be prepared for the same to happen here," he told a press conference.

However, high vaccination rates put Wales in stark contrast to London.

More than 2 million people in Wales have received two doses of Covid-19 vaccine, equivalent to 83 per cent of the population. Nearly 50 per cent of people have received a booster.

Meanwhile official data reported by Nub News colleagues in London today reveal boroughs with surging infection rates have among the lowest vaccination rates across the UK.

Sharing advice with residents on social media, the Vale of Glamorgan Council said: "Coronavirus is still spreading in Wales, but together we can disrupt the transmission. Wear a mask when needed.

"Get tested and self-isolate if required. Get vaccinated."
