Whilst lockdown has stopped many of us in our tracks, work on Comeston's Medieval Village has been catapulted forward as a pair of family thatchers continue work on buildings in the Medieval Village.

The Vale Council said: ''Father and son Master Thatchers, Keith and Tom Walden, have been busy replacing the oven building's framework and thatch at Cosmeston Medieval Village.

"In medieval times the village baker was a man of substance who rented a building in which he produced his goods for sale.

"Only the baker, having paid the lord of the manor rental for the ovens, was allowed to bake bread.

"The small building is constructed around two ovens, one is for baking bread and the other is a malting oven for making ale."

While the Medieval Village is still closed to the public Visit the Vale said: ''This time of year our volunteers are usually spending countless hours maintaining their areas, however, this year we are trying to not let them down and keep everything in tip-top condition until they are allowed to return.''
