A consultation has been launched on proposed changes to roads around Fairfield Primary School, after the temporary closure last week.

The proposals are part of the Fairfield Community Street Design project, and are based on all feedback from parents, residents, and the school.

Sustrans Cymru, a charity promoting walking and cycling, and the Vale of Glamorgan Council have developed proposals for Dryden Road, Wordsworth Avenue and Tennyson Road as these are the key areas highlighted in the feedback where there is the biggest need for improvement.

"Problems caused by congestion at pick up and drop off times have resulted in an environment around the school that parents, children, and residents are not happy with," reads the Vale Council report on the proposals.

The proposed changes are:

  • Introduce a one-way system on Dryden Road;
  • Reduce the number of cars entering Dryden Road at school peak times;
  • Remove guard rail along Dryden Road and replace with rain gardens and trees;
  • Install a median strip along Wordsworth Avenue as a traffic calming feature;
  • Improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists along Wordsworth Avenue;
  • Pedestrian crossing improvements and junction narrowing to provide safer crossing for vulnerable road users

"70% of pupils live within one mile of the school but only 29% currently travel actively to school," the report continues.

"By implementing the measures proposed we will deliver a safer pedestrian and cyclist environment, and will improve accessibility to schools, shops, the train station and onwards to the town centre."

The consultation is open until 26 October. Click here to view the scheme drawings and here to respond to the consultation.
