The people of Penarth have rallied to raise over £1,500 to repair the damage inflicted by vandals on a Penarth Athletic Club-owned marquee.

In a social media post, club Chairman Steve Newman said he is "bowled over" by the support.

According to Mr Newman, the several large gashes that appeared on Friday night were caused by "three individuals who seem to have a grudge against the club."

He said the club is in possession of CCTV footage implicating the individuals and that they await "further conversations with the police on how to proceed."

A GoFundMe page, organised just two days ago by Huw Scott Jones with help from the U13s rugby team, has at the time of writing raised £1,630 through 98 donors.

"I don't not want to dwell on the negative but celebrate how in adversity our Club and community has responded," Mr Newman wrote on social media.

"As I write this the fund has exceeded £1300 and Hayley just joked that if this continues we will be able to afford an extension!

So a HUGE thank you to you all, please continue using the Club as you are, have a great Christmas and stay safe through these difficult times."
