Ty Gwyn Care Home resident Esme Williams celebrates her 90th birthday in style with her daughter Sian.

Whilst having a chat with a few members of staff, Esme revealed she would soon be turning 90 years old and said she would love to have a little birthday lunch with her daughter.

One of the carers whom Esme told this to went to speak with Neil, the Community Co-ordinator based in Ty Gwyn, who upon hearing of the special day began putting plans in place for a surprise birthday luncheon for Esme.

Neil contacted Foxy's Deli in Penarth and after ordering two Welsh afternoon teas for the surprise, joined forces with Claire the housekeeper to set up a room with decorations and lay a lovely table for the celebration.

On the day, Esme met her daughter Sian outside the home as Sian had arranged for some of Esme's old neighbours and friends to visit and wish her a happy birthday. Whilst this was happening, Claire and Neil were busy putting the final pieces in place for the surprise luncheon.

When Esme and Sian came into the home, Neil led them to their own private dining area where a superb afternoon tea for two was laid on for them both.

Esme was overwhelmed with the lovely surprise, saying: "Oooooh well I never expected this, how lovely!"

There was a hot pot of fresh tea, sandwich selection, cakes including bara brith, Welsh cakes and to top it off fresh baked scones with lashings of jam and clotted cream.

Esme and Sian said they both really enjoyed their surprise afternoon tea and that it was very thoughtful of the home to organise it.

Neil told Sian and Esme that the luncheon was not quite over, disappearing out of the room to return with a superb chocolate cake with candles.

Esme blew out the candles and made a wish.

Neil said: "It was lovely to make Esme's wish come true and to celebrate her 90th birthday with her.

"Our residents may have a simple dream or wish but we take it on ourselves here in MHA to make it a special day full of memories and to let them live later life well."
