A Cardiff bus has crashed through a back garden fence and wall on Lavernock Road, directly opposite The Glamorganshire Golf Club.

The bus was empty besides the driver, who a police officer at the scene said was "fine". Paramedics were treating the driver in an ambulance at 7:25am.

The owner of the house, elderly resident Brian Casey, witnessed the crash from his kitchen window. He said the incident occurred at roughly 6:30am and assured us the driver did not appear to be seriously injured.

"I was making myself and the wife a cup of tea and I heard an almighty bang," he told Nub News. "My fence and everything went flying and the bus ended up down there [points towards Sully]."

Much of Mr Casey's back garden fence and foot-high wall were destroyed. He and the police officer were sweeping debris - glass, brick and bus parts - from the road when Nub News arrived.

The vehicle suffered severe damage on the non-driver's side, with the door and external rail breaking off. It was heading towards Barry/Sully. The cause of the crash is currently unknown.

Mr Casey was in good spirits and joking with neighbours. One neighbour asked: "What have you done here then, Brian?"

"I got in a fight," Mr Casey laughed. "Well, that's my day gone isn't it?"

He is adamant that Cardiff Bus will pay for the damage.

When Nub News left the scene at 7:40am, only a small traffic jam had formed and cars were passing along one lane. There are no reports that the road has been closed.

Note from the editor: The initial headline read 'Bus crashes through back garden fence on Cosmeston Drive', which was a mistake. The incident took place on Lavernock Road.
