Both RNLI Penarth lifeboats were called to a serious scene near Newport late this afternoon.

They were launched at 16:02 to assist a coastguard helicopter in evacuating an injured fisherman stranded on the rocks off Goldcliff.

Also in attendance were an NHS HART Team (Hazard Area Response Team) and a Coastguard Rescue Team from Chepstow.

The helicopter was able to winch the casualty off the rocks and into the care of the HART team and the Welsh Ambulance Service.

According to Jason Dunlop, Lifeboat Operations Manager for RNLI Penarth:

"One of our lifeboat Crew who is also a HART member went ashore to assist with the operation. The Lifeboat then returned to station.

"The Lifeboat was refuelled and ready for service at 18:56."

A video taken by Penarth Nub News shows the smaller D-class lifeboat returning to the station at just after 16:30, which suggests it turned around before reaching Newport.

Nub News has been unable to confirm this.
