Penarth Town Council last month launched a public consultation to gauge how residents want Pembroke Terrace Play Area improved.

The Council has received a sum of £5,000 from the Welsh Government's "All Wales Play Opportunities Grant" to "revitalise" the site, and it is currently deciding how best to spend the funds.

The consultation results were presented to Penarth Town Council during last night's meeting.

Peter Newton, the officer responsible for the consultation, stated that funds are likely to be spent on additional seating, more greenery and equipment suitable for children aged between eight and 16.

The entranceways to the site are also likely to be "improved".

Of the 58 respondents, 33 wanted additional seating, 31 wanted more flowers/planting, 24 wanted more play equipment for those between five and 10 years of age, and 20 wanted more play equipment for those aged.

"We found that most people use the site for their children and children in their care to play, followed closely by those who like to use the site to spend time with their friends," Mr Newton commented. "This does suggest a slightly older demographic of young people."

Councillors expressed their approval of intentions to improve play opportunities for older children.

Cllr Yvonne Murphy of St Augustine's Ware commented: "I think it's important that both age groups are looked after as it's already a very popular spot for young children, but I think older kids (older than 11) are really not catered for very well in Penarth and this is a really important hanging out spot."

Cllr Ian Buckley of Cornerswell Ward agreed:

"I don't want to see the equipment for younger children taken out, I'd just like to see the stuff for older kids added."

Town Mayor Mark Wilson also stated his support for introducing equipment that caters for the older demographic.
