Two Penarth women have shaved their heads to raise money for the breast cancer awareness charity CoppaFeel.

They have currently raised over £2,000 for the organisation, which encourages and reminds women to check their breasts for cancer.

Naomi Burke, founder of the Penarth macramé business The Loop Knot, says watching an interview with the charity's founder inspired her to take the plunge.

"She was talking about how she only found out how truly awesome she was when she was diagnosed, and I thought: 'I want to feel as awesome as she feels now'," she tells Nub News.

"After hearing that interview and doing a lot of digging into body confidence, I decided to shave my head and wanted do something good in the process."

She began to research the charity and admired their emphasis on prevention as opposed to treatment.

"It's all about encouraging people to check themselves and really get to know their bodies and to not be scared to go to the doctors when they find something.

"So, I spoke to a few people about it and Liz was like: 'I always wanted to shave my head!'"

Liz Davies is currently in her first year of a midwifery degree and says the cause is extremely important to her.

"I feel I owe it to the women I work with and care for to make sure they are informed, educated and confident about their own bodies, especially their boobs!

"I am lucky enough that I have not known anyone close to me have breast cancer. But it's definitely a cause close to my heart as my mum has been a mammographer for Breast Test Wales for over 30 years."

Naomi and Liz vowed to shave their scalps upon reaching the £1,000 fundraising target they set themselves.

To their surprise, this was reached within just four days.

They livestreamed the event on Instagram and the video has been viewed over 1,000 times.

Thankfully, they are happy with the result.

"Without the hair, you've kind of been stripped of that security blanket you have, and then once it's gone you realise: 'I still feel like me. I still feel sexy, I still feel pretty'," says Naomi.

"I don't need all that facade - the hair, the clothes. It comes from within me. And once you realise that you feel powerful. You feel like a badass."

"Shaving your head makes you realise that you can do what you want on top of that," adds Liz.

"As long as you're doing what you want and forging your own path, then it doesn't matter what you're doing really."
