UP CLOSE: Penarth teens become holiday handymen
Penarth Nub News aims to support our community - promoting shops, businesses, artists, charities, clubs and sports groups.
We are profiling some of these in a feature called 'Up Close in Penarth'.
Today, we introduce you to an industrious trio of teens taking on odd-jobs over the Easter break.
Owing perhaps to an addiction to The Apprentice in my mid-teens, I must have had 50 ideas for start-ups that would make me the world's youngest billionaire.
But actualising those visions was always a different matter.
That's why I was shocked to find a trio of Stanwell Year 10s out washing cars during this Easter holiday heatwave.
Fifteen-year-olds Lucas Perez, Theo Broughton and Cai Eastwood are using the Easter break to get their car washing business off the ground.
"We thought of it last year," says Lucas. "But obviously because of lockdown we couldn't really do it with the restrictions.
"It's fine now though and because we're in the same year group we're a bubble anyway," chimes in Theo.
They are charging £7 per car, which they say takes 20 minutes or so between the three of them.
The boys bring their own gear (including face masks to wear when interacting with customers) and say their versatility is their strength.
"We don't just do cars," continues Lucas. "On Thursday we're also doing some weeding and Karchering someone's patio."
All start-ups take a little while to get off the ground. On Monday, their first day, the trio cleaned just three cars.
"It'll get better once we get the word out there," says Theo.
"I think it's great," their second Tuesday customer tells Nub News while the boys set up their hose.
"I noticed them in the street doing a neighbour's car and thought, 'I need my car doing, why not?'
"It keeps them off the street, as they say."
It's been a difficult year to be a teenager - a year of remote learning and limited social interaction.
Besides the profit incentive, the boys say they are also relishing the opportunity to get out and have a laugh with their mates.
"We're actually really enjoying it," says Cai Eastwood. "It feels good to be out the house."
