Penarth Yacht Club has donated a cheque of more than £3,000 to the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal after completing a sponsored row on March 16.

Members of Penarth Yacht Club used eight rowing machines to row as far as they could within a one-hour timeframe.

The public had to guess the total distance and the person with the closest guess won £25 and a bottle of champagne.

The guesses were £1 each or six guesses for £5. An Irish-themed charity evening for members at the club on March 19 also boosted the £3,011 total, with a raffle and auction.

Brian Brayford, 74, a member of Penarth Yacht Club, told Nub News: "The group rowed 102,584 metres in the hour and Steph Price from Penarth guessed within 16 metres of the final total!

"Proceeds of the auction and raffle held at the charity evening helped to boost the fund and thanks to all the local business who donated prizes and items for the auction."

Mr Brayford presented the cheque to Gemma Sawyer, area manager at the British Red Cross and Bill Townsend, a British Red Cross volunteer.
