A therapy practice that specialises in treating patients with anxiety and depression has opened in the centre of Penarth.

BetterTalk, which has just opened its doors in the last few days, occupies a space within the John Bruno Total Training on Glebe Street and is owned by Nicola Lloyd-Evans, 48, a Penarth resident for more than 15 years.

She qualified as a therapist in 2019 after working at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama for more than two decades.

Nicola retrained with the Human Givens Institute and mainly focuses on treating patients with conditions such as anxiety and depression but can also help with other emotional issues such as addiction.

"I've always had a strong interest in mental health and I knew there was a growing need for more qualified therapists," said Nicola.

"NHS waiting lists are getting longer and the established therapists already in Penarth are having to create waiting lists as well because of the high demand. So, by opening BetterTalk, I can help fill that capacity."

The plan was to open a practice after receiving her qualification, but COVID-19 made it impossible. "I wanted to launch my practice before the pandemic and it's been a long wait, but now I can finally build some momentum and get everything up and running."

There has already been a steady flow of interest in the therapy practice, with the majority coming from nearby towns away from Penarth. "I've had enquiries from people in towns like Bridgend and Rhoose," said Nicola.

"Maybe it's more of a comfort for people to step outside of their hometowns to seek therapeutic help. But I hope people that live in Penarth that feel they need counselling can come to my centre."

Hypnotherapists, physiotherapists, and other practitioners are also set up at John Bruno Total Training which makes the centre a hub for wellness.

"It's a real centre of wellbeing and their [John Bruno Total Training] holistic approach makes the partnership a perfect fit," said Nicola.
