The Penarth Civic Society is hoping to appoint more committee members as it prepares for a busy period with upcoming projects across the town.
A push for more committee members is needed as the society has been inundated with interest for their sub-groups, which are: The Italian Gardens; Penarth Tree Forum; Beach Wardens; Friends of Victoria Square; and Railway Path Project.
At present, there are nine committee members each of who leads on a particular aspect of the society's work. Help behind the scenes as secretary, or membership secretary would make a big difference to the work the society is able to do.
Anne Evans, chair of Penarth Civic Society, told Nub News: "Even somebody to come along to events and be in charge of making tea and coffee would be very useful.
"I think one of the issues with the civic society is people assume that you have had to live in Penarth your whole life. But on our new website, I made a point of saying that I wasn't born and bred here."
More recently, the society has concentrated on environmental issues, working with local groups such as Gwyrddio Penarth Greening (GPG).
The society also set up Penarth Tree Forum in 2016 and discusses sites for potential new trees with the council, as well as trees that need attention.
A heritage project is also in the pipeline. "It's very early days, but we're looking to have a series of information boards, blue plaques and QR codes dotted around the town," said David Noble, a member of the Penarth Civic Society. "They will talk about the history of the town, buildings and their history, prominent people of the town."
Six people are currently working on the project, and it's hoped a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund will be made by the end of the year.
Friends of Victoria Square, another sub-group of the society, recently received two grants worth £40,000 which allowed them to survey, create a community garden and plant trees.
A Penarth Civic Society membership costs £10 per year for an individual and £15 per year for a couple. To find out more about becoming a member, email [email protected]
