The importance of urban trees was the main topic of a recent meeting arranged by the Penarth Tree Forum.

Around 50 people attended to hear about the group's work and to find out how they can contribute to increasing the number of trees in the town.

Since its formation about four years ago, the group has been working towards achieving Woodland Town Status – which would need an increase in tree canopy cover to 20% (it is currently 17.4%).

The Civic Society, which the tree Forum is part of, now has groups working on the Railway Path, Victoria Square and, most recently, the Italian Gardens.

The assistance of the Vale of Glamorgan Council with these projects has helped enormously.

As well as hearing about these projects, the meeting also heard from Russell Horsey, a member of the Chartered Institute of Foresters, who has been supporting the Tree Forum.

He shared his knowledge of and enthusiasm for trees, especially in the urban environment, in a very interesting and stimulating presentation.

For the final part of the evening, the audience was asked for their ideas on improving the tree canopy in Penarth. The group will now evaluate these responses.

Penarth Tree Forum would welcome contact from anyone who is interested in working with them or if anyone is interested in improving a local area with their neighbours then please contact Penarth Civic Society via Facebook or by email: [email protected]
