Penarth Beach Clean: Bottles, Sandals and Boxers

Local News by The Editor 23rd Jul 2020

Local residents Kath Fisher and Sue Reilly organised a beach clean at Penarth's seafront which took place today with a host of volunteers.

Ten residents took part who were organised through the Facebook group "Penarth Helping Hands".

This group was started during the coronavirus pandemic to encourage the community to come together and has continued to support the town ever since.

In total, 8 bin bags of rubbish were collected in today's session.

Nub News spoke to Kath Fisher about the big clean.

She said: ''We got all our volunteers from the Helping Hands Facebook group. as I'm on the lifeboat crew, I'm familiar with the tides and beach etc so I organised a day and time that was good in that respect.

"It will be a regular thing and if people want to join in please visit Penarth Helping Hands Facebook page as you can register there.

They found a lot of different kinds of rubbish on the beach, including a few items that are quite hard to explain.

"The weirdest object was a shoe and men's pants (three pairs!) but lots of cans and glass and plastic bottles."

Rubbish, especially on the seafront, has been a particular problem as lockdown restrictions have eased.

Kath said: ''Lockdown easing has caused an increase as people do congregate at the seafront and have takeaway food and drinks.

"It could be seen as a nuisance, but they have few places to go at the moment so it is understandable.

"There actually wasn't as much rubbish as we were expecting so also good in that respect. It's also good that about half of the 'consumables' litter was either biodegradable or wooden cutlery, so some progress has been made."

The next clean will be in a couple of weeks of time and volunteers are encouraged to get involved.
