Today marks the funeral of Peter Goodfellow, the well-loved local sportsman, and Penarth came out in force to pay their respects.

With restrictions currently limiting the attendance at funerals due to the coronavirus pandemic, residents found another way to show their support and remember Mr Goodfellow.

Penarthians lined the streets from their homes to applaud the local rugby and cricket legend as the hearse passed by on the way to the funeral.

He lost his battle to a short illness that he fought courageously, Peter passed away at home aged 58.

In his lifetime, he had played rugby union for Cardiff, Penarth, Newbridge, Bridgend and captained Glamorgan Wanderers as well as representing Crawshays.

He was also an avid cricket player.

Tributes have poured in from sporting clubs and groups to show their respect and share their memories.

Cardiff Blues said: ''Awfully sad to hear the news about Peter Goodfellow. He remained a regular on the terraces supporting Cardiff RFC and Cardiff Blues

''Our thoughts are with all of his friends, family and the other clubs he represented through his career''

The Old Penarthians RFC said: ''It is with great sadness we have to announce Peter Goodfellow passed away after recently being diagnosed with cancer.

''He was former 1st XV Captain and Fixture Secretary.

''Our thoughts are with Peter's family & friends.''

Geraint John, Welsh Rugby Union community director, said: ''We met when I was 18 - became friends ever since. Top man, talented sportsman - thoughts with his family - RIP.''

Penarth Athletic Club encouraged residents to show their respects today. They said: ''The cortege will be leaving Summers Funeral Home at 10:20 am proceeding up the length of Westbourne Road before turning left onto Victoria Road and along to the traffic lights near Stanwell School.

''It'll then turn left onto Lavernock Road for about 10:30 am, passing the Old Pens and Penarth RFC before carrying on to golf club at around 10.35. From there it will travel onto Sully and finally to Barry.'

''If you are in a position to be on the route (without driving) please respect the social distancing rules.

''Whether on the route or at home please consider wearing club attire on Wednesday morning if you are able.''
