Parking charges coming to Cosmeston Park

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has dismissed 155 objections and will implement a parking charge at Cosmeston Country Park Car Park.

Once local lockdown restrictions are lifted, visitors will be charged £1 for two hours, £2 for four hours and £4 for the day.

Parking charges will apply between 10AM and 5PM from October to February and from 10AM to 8PM for the rest of the year.

A £30 six-month (or £50 annual) season ticket will be made available.

Cllr Peter King explains the parking charge to Nub News.

"We have to be able to sustain the country parks and they cost us a lot of money to operate," he said. "There's no point beating around the bush, we're doing it to generate an income stream for their maintenance."

"We are hoping to offer a season ticket for the incredibly modest charge of £30 for six months available for residents," he added.

"The idea is that the genuine visitors - those from Cardiff and Ponty and everywhere - are getting it for free and yet the rate payers have been subsidising their visits."

Vale Council Lis Burnett explains why the charge will not be introduced until after local restrictions are lifted:

"I think at the moment, when we have local restrictions, the only people who should be in our country parks are Vale residents and it has always been our intention to protect and minimise any impact on them. It would therefore be wrong to implement any charges until then."

Han Bevmoh, who runs the community group Sully Village Hub, has criticised the decision:

"I am saddened to see that the objections raised by local residents have been ignored. Why do the Vale ask us for our views if they ignore them?"
