Inside Out exhibition in Penarth brings back memories of Tiger Bay

By Jack Wynn 17th Feb 2022

An exhibition to be held at The Turner House on Plymouth Road will showcase a range of photography from two brothers who grew up in Tiger Bay.

Simon and Anthony Campbell, who lived in the area formerly known as Tiger Bay, shot images of day-to-day life as well as big events in the community and a selection of their work

Spanning a period from the 1970s to the 1990s, Inside Out documents a period of great physical change in the area and celebrates the spirit of the people that lived through it.

Rather than a chronological approach, the black and white photography exhibition juxtaposes images from different years.

People depicted are local characters, family and friends that are named in the captions as you make your way from one photograph to the next.

Anthony Campbell played bass guitar in local soul band Messiah during the 1970s and always had a camera handy to photograph people during breaks in the music. He now works as a freelance designer in London.

Simon Campbell has a long history of working within the local community, helping to establish the Butetown Photography Group and the Black Film And Video Workshop.

Inside Out has been curated by Cardiff Umbrella in partnership with Penarth Town Council.

The exhibition is free and will be shown from February 24 to March 20.
