Esplanade defaced as Anarchist graffiti campaign returns

Both sides of an information board on the Esplanade have been targeted in the latest episode of an Anarchist graffiti campaign.

Reports of far-left slogans and logos appearing across the town date back as far as March last year.

A resident named Laura Seymour has shown Nub News pictures from mid-2019 of park benches and bins bearing anti-fascist and anarchist phrases.

But the campaign has seemingly intensified in recent weeks.

On the night of 29 September 2020, Baron's Court junction and Cogan roundabout were heavily targeted.

"Make the rich pay for COVID-19" defaced a service building at Chandler's Quay while "Fuck Law and Order" was painted onto a wall at Cogan roundabout.

The acronym ACAB, meaning "All Police Are Bastards", adorns a sign at the same spot. Residents awoke to see the Anarchist logo painted in red over the "A" in town's welcome sign.

Penarthians have since identified various other locations, including a bench at Alexandra Park and the Zig-Zag path down to the marina.

Responding to concerns raised by councillors during an October meeting, Sgt Sam Johnson of South Wales Police commented:

"We are building up intelligence on the incident. We believe it is the same person writing all the graffiti."
