Gwyrddio Penarth Greening (GPG), a local environmental group, has planted a wildflower garden at Stanwell Crescent as part of its 'Growing Community' initiative.

The group received a 'Wildlife Garden Pack' from the charity Keep Wales Tidy as part of their Local Places for Nature fund.

It includes the following:

- Bird feeders / habitat boxes

-Bulbs, plug plants, shrubs

-Peat-free compost and topsoil

-Hand tools

The garden was planted in rainy conditions last week and is designed to promote the flourishing of wildlife through providing diverse habitats.

Eurgain Powell, who leads the Growing Community initiative, told Nub News:

"Despite the difficult year we've all had it's brilliant to see so much interest and enthusiasm for looking after our local environment.

"These projects will help improve biodiversity and nature and leave a long lasting legacy for us all to enjoy," she added.

"Local resident, Paul Beswick, instigated the project and has spent countless hours clearing the site of ivy and brambles before it could be transformed into the wildlife garden.

"It's been a labour of love for him and he's very excited that local residents and children will be able to enjoy the space as it grows."

As part of the group's successful application to the Local Places for Nature fund, they will also receive a 'Fruit Garden Pack'.

According to Keep Wales Tidy, the pack enables local environmental groups to plant "trees and bushes that will provide fruit for your local community to grow, harvest and enjoy."

Planting will begin at the end of the month when the pack is due to be delivered.

Alongside the Vale of Glamorgan Council, the GPG have chosen the Wordsworth Park Community Garden as the planting site.
