Penarth neighbours unite for classical concert to help Ukraine
Classical musicians who are neighbours in Penarth are uniting for a one-off special concert to raise money for the Ukraine crisis.
Pianist Robin Green and his Russian-born violinist wife, Maia Broido, are joining forces with BBC National Orchestra of Wales Leader Lesley Hatfield, Canadian violinist Tetsuumi Nagata and cellist Alice Neary for a one-off chamber concert at Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff on Sunday, March 27.
"We talked as friends and neighbours who happen to be part of an incredible community of musicians in the area," said Robin, who has relatives in Ukraine through his wife Maia's family. "We decided to do something to bring people together through music and raise much-needed money since every penny helps.
"We're close to the Ukrainian community in Cardiff, through cultural links between Russia and Ukraine as well as sharing a common language. Many families have relatives in both countries and everyone is hurting.
"In what feels like a helpless situation, we wanted to do something good for the community to show solidarity and support that will also help those suffering from Ukraine.
"As musicians, our language is music and we know what it can do for people. Only last week our friend, Petr Limonov, organised a flash mob orchestra to play the Ukraine national anthem at Trafalgar Square to show Ukrainians 'we stand with them'. These wonderful things bring hope and positivity and bring people together."
The concert, which includes works by Ukrainian-born composers Levina, Glière and Russian composer Shostakovich, has already been match-funded to the tune of £4,000 thanks to a team of generous donors.
Now the musicians want to make sure the concert is a sell-out to release that much-needed financial support. All profits from the concert will go directly to the DEC Appeal.
Tickets are available for £10-£15 from the RWCMD Box Office or by phoning 029 2039 1391.
