A group of Penarth residents that meet every Monday morning for Welsh conversation sessions are keen for more people to join.

The group meet at Foxy's Deli and Café to speak Welsh and there has been significant interest from people who are not Welsh to learn the language.

Sian Fox, the owner of Foxy's Deli and Café, told Nub News: "Lots of people from England and other places that move to Penarth think, 'I should really learn Welsh'.

"We also have good Welsh schools here. You find the parents want to learn a bit of Welsh just to help their kids."

The Welsh language has been a prominent topic of discussion recently. Last month, Welsh Government announced a further £190,000 for Mudiad Meithrin to nurture the Welsh language, in addition to the £3 million already invested.

Rowland Davies, 75, a resident of Penarth, said: "A few of us get together and speak Welsh," said Rowland. 'We live in a bilingual country, and I've learnt Welsh myself – I'm not a first language speaker. My son went to a Welsh school and is a fluent Welsh speaker.

"I think it's important for as many people as possible to be able to speak Welsh. Interestingly, of the learners I know in Penarth, quite a few come from different parts of England."

Current attendees can speak Welsh either at a fluent or moderate level. But everyone is welcome to attend and learn from one another. "There are two Welsh speakers that work here that can serve them [the group] and that's a nice thing for them to do, to practice," said Sian.

Sessions run every Monday morning between 11:00 – 12:00 at Foxy's Deli and Café on Victoria Road.
