Public toilets have reopened across Penarth and the Vale of Glamorgan, and are being cleaned more often throughout the day.

This is a different approach to Cardiff where the council has not yet made the decision to reopen these facilities.

Loos were shut at the start of the coronavirus lockdown, to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Many people have struggled without them as private facilities were also shut.

Parks and beaches have also seen an increase in public urination which has been noted, in particular, by local residents on Penarth's seafront.

Public toilets across the Vale were re-opened on Saturday, June 20.

Cleaners will staff some toilets, and all loos across the district will be cleaned more often than usual, to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

A Vale of Glamorgan Council spokesperson said: "Toilets in our resorts and town centres were opened on Saturday.

"Cleaning frequencies have been increased and extra soap dispensers installed.

"Our busiest toilets, in King Square and Barry Island, are staffed so they can be cleaned throughout the day, while smaller facilities have seen cleaning schedules increased from once to three times daily.

"Doors have been propped open to reduce hand contact areas and extra hand sanitiser has been ordered. Smaller toilets have a one-in, one-out arrangement and larger toilets have social distancing signs in place."
