Penarth signage returns with Fairtrade appendage

The Penarth Town welcome signage has return after being taken down for refurbishment on 28 January.

Funded by the Vale of Glamorgan Council, the signs have been cleaned, repainted and polished - taking on a sheen symbolic (perhaps) of the town's newfound optimism.

A new, separate Fairtrade banner has been added underneath. It recognises Penarth's position as a so-called "Fairtrade Town", a status it has held since 2006.

"Fairtrade Towns" must meet the following five criteria:

  1. Local council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and agrees to serve Fairtrade products (for example, in meetings, offices
and canteens).
  1. A range of (at least two) Fairtrade products are readily available in the area's retail outlets (shops, supermarkets, newsagents,
petrol stations) and served in local catering outlets (cafés, restaurants, pubs).
  1. Local workplaces and community organisations (places of worship, schools, universities, colleges and other community organisations) support Fairtrade and use Fairtrade products whenever possible.
  2. Media coverage and events raise awareness and understanding of Fairtrade across the community.
  3. A local Fairtrade steering group is convened to ensure the Fairtrade Town campaign continues to develop and gain new support.

Penarth did so following a ten month campaign led by the Penarth Fairtrade Forum.

The sprucing up came following a tough 2020 for the signage.

In October, the name sign at the Baron's Court junction became just one of the targets of an overnight graffiti campaign promoting Anarchist ideology.
