Rising tennis stars from Penarth represented Wales at the Lawn Tennis Association's Junior Home Nations Tennis Championships last week.

Outside of the Commonwealth Youth Games, the Junior Home Nations is the only opportunity for young, Welsh tennis stars to represent their country.

Six promising local players followed in Andy and Jamie Murray's footsteps to compete for a Junior Home Nations Title.

The elite tennis tournament for ages 10 – 18 was held at Corby Tennis Centre, 24 – 26 September.

The Welsh team competed brilliantly, successfully winning the 14U category with Scotland taking the 12U title and England the 18U title and the overall Home Nations crown.

Felix Evans, from Penarth, played in the number one position for the U14 boys. He won four out of six matches.

"It's the tennis equivalent of having a Welsh Rugby Grand Slam Champion living in Penarth," says Felix's Dad, Jon Bockelmann-Evans, his chest swelling with pride.

Evan Lendum, also of Penarth played one doubles match for the U12s against Ireland, which he and his partner won. Unfortunately, he picked up an injury which meant he could not continue to play any matches in the competition.

Chris Lewis, Head of Performance said: "It was a brilliant experience for the players involved in this year's event with a team event as ever providing so much more atmosphere and memorable moments than individual events sometimes do.

"With the event not taking place in 2020 and Tennis Wales not having overseen a tournament trip in two years, this event was a long time coming and you could see how excited the players and coaches were to be a part of it.

"A special thanks goes to Luke Simeone and Becca Strelzyn for their excellent captaincy over the course of the weekend and to all the players who represented Wales superbly".

The 2022 Junior Home Nations will be hosted in Scotland.
