Gwyrddio Penarth Greening (GPG) is holding an event to discuss Penarth's next steps in tackling climate change. Residents are invited to come and discuss: What can we do locally about the climate emergency?

The discussion marks the 10th anniversary of the GPG group, which began with a public meeting about how the people of Penarth could find effective ways of acting locally on environmental issues. They remain a local voluntary group who have achieved a variety of environmental targets in the past ten years; including, starting Shop Penarth and successfully achieving a Plastic-Free status for the town.

Anxiety is rising about climate change, especially in the wake of: Australian fires, youth climate strikes, this week's news that the oceans are warmer than ever and that the previous decade was the hottest so far.

GPG is aiming to convert that anxiety into meaningful, purposeful, effective, realistic local action

To do this they want to get a really good mix of people in the room, from different walks of life – rather than just the 'usual suspects', or the people whose voices are always heard.

The discussion will focus on the next 10 years and how GPG will make a difference in Penarth. They are looking for ideas and support from local people.

The evening will involve hearing from other communities and their approaches as well as listening to the views of local residents and how GPG can help turn those ideas into actions.

Someone from Renew Wales, someone from the Monmouth Transition Town campaign, a Cardiff University researcher, and speakers from Penarth Youth Action will all share stories and ideas throughout the session.

GPG chair Gideon Calder says: 'People often tell us they'd do more if they could, about the climate emergency – but that they're not sure how best to act, or how to turn ideas into things which actually make a difference. Our aim in this event is to help the Penarth community do exactly that. It's all about finding out what people's priorities are, and working out how we can act on them.'

GPG founder member Tricia Griffiths says: 'The world has moved on in many ways since GPG first got started. Environmental threats are now more urgent. But people's awareness of them is also much greater. We really hope we can use the Penarth 2020 campaign to help find concrete ways of making a difference at the local level.'

The Penarth 2020 event will take place on 30 January, 7 - 8.30 pm, St Augustine's Parish Hall, Albert Rd.
