Hundreds took to the Penarth shore yesterday morning to mark World Mental Health Day.

The event was organised by Penarth Dawnstalkers, Penarth RNLI and the Jacob Abraham Foundation.

Since the group started sunrise sea-swimming, many members found their mental health improved through boosting their mood and meeting new people.

Lifeboat operations manager Jason Dunlop said the event was "amazing" and is proud to work with the Dawnstalkers and Jacob Abraham Foundation.

"We recognize the impact of mental health on everybody's life, and I think that's a narrative that we can be involved in.

"Living on an island, we should recognise the benefits of being in the sea. In lockdown we've seen an increased number of people getting involved in the scene.

"So, we've now got to react to that and to engage with people by giving them tips on calling for help, what to be careful about and helping them to engage in activities.

"While we all know the RNLI is something that can go and rescue people, actually helping people safely enjoy the sea is a big part of what we do.

"If we can provide advice, or guidance to groups of people who want to enjoy the sea, it makes our role far easier."

As well as reflecting on their own mental health, many were there to remember loved ones.

The Jacob Abraham Foundation aims to help prevent suicide through direct intervention with vulnerable people, raise awareness on mental health and support people bereaved through suicide in South Wales.
