Vale MP Alun Cairns joined 'Pass Wide and Slow' campaigners on Sunday in Wenvoe, as they took to horseback to promote safety towards vulnerable road users.

Campaigners across the Vale in Wenvoe and Dinas Powys were highlighting the importance of careful driving on the rural Vale country lanes. The event comes as safety calls grow amongst horse riders, who face risks of serious injuries while riding on rural lanes.

With hundreds of 'Pass Wide and Slow' campaigns taking place at the weekend, local MP Alun Cairns commented: "It was fantastic to see so many groups across the country reminding vehicle users the importance of passing wide and slow, not just for their safety but for drivers too, by passing at least two metres apart and no faster than 15mph."

The MP has shown his support for the campaign in previous years and has backed the rollout of the '20 is plenty scheme' which has seen many rural places in the Vale like Aberthin and St Brides Major implement a 20mph speed limit.

Debbie Smith, Co-Founder of Pass Wide & Slow Group commented: "The British Horse Society statistics state that nearly 2 horses are killed each week on UK roads and 81% of incidents occurred because cars passed too closely to horses.

"We want to educate drivers on how as riders we keep ourselves safe, we are now using cameras, hi viz and this is also a way to encourage riders to be polite to drivers."

If your village or town is in need of a 20mph speed limit, please contact Alun Cairns via email to progress the case.
